Andaman- Havelock and Port blair travel checklist



  1. Take BSNL connection with you. It will be widely available and specially in havelock/swaraj dweep which has very poor connectivity.
  2. Always keep windcheater/light raincoat handy, as you may not know when rains will come.
  3. Carry a water proof bag to keep dry clothes and other important items. You can take it along short visits.
  4. Rise early and sleep early. As the island is towards far east, the sun rises early, so adjust your clock to about 1.5 to 2 hrs from delhi or mainland..
  5. Radhanagar beach closes at 5 sharp
  6. Elephanta beach also closes at 3 PM. 
  7. There is trek to elephanta from around 1.5. to 2 km before Radhanagar beach. Adventurous people can try it. ts not very long, around 1.5 km only. But not in rains, as it can be slippery.
  8. Boat to elephanta beach can be taken from the jetty. 
  9. Have a water proof pouch/bag for your mobile. we lost 2 mobiles on this trip.
  10. Come to port blair from havelock around 1-2 days before the flight.If weather becomes bad, you may get stuck at havelock and may miss flight from port blair.
  11. Ross island is very pretty. Have lots of friendly deers and excellent views. Once you reach island, take the golf cart to last point first, and then spend remaining time exploring the island and clicking pics.
  12. Keep lots of sunscreen cream and keep it handy
  13. Keep lot of dryfits, to avoid hassles of drying clothes.
  14. Take scuba shoes with you. Due to corals, they are good to wear inside water. try decathlon
  15. For cellular jail, sound and light show, you need to make online booking, by connecting to wifi network that is available at jail ticket premises. Once you submit all details, you can select available times and make a booking, Show booking and pay at ticket counter to get tickets. Shows start from 5.30 pm onwards.
  16. Keep good polarised sunglasses.
  17. Keep caps/hats to ward off the sun. 
  18. If you buy any sea shell etc, you will need to have the bill with you on the returning flight. Nothing is allowed without bill.Forest department will confiscate it.
  19.  Keep lots of extra cash. credit card machines typically have issues due to internet. Extra cash may be needed if flights, cruise etc is rescheduled due to rains etc. Its a cash country.

To many people the word brahmin and pandit means the same. I wanted my 2 brahmin friends accompanying me to a recent Jaipur trip, to visit the Amer fort temple. They wanted to leave fast and rest. Answer -  Pandits usually charge a fees for things that they do... like karm kand etc... Brahmins are the ones who are also priests, gurus etc but live on dakshina and not fees...

Difference between role and designation

This is a follow up post based on a comment on my old post . Here are dictionary definitions of Role and designation Role - Prescribed or expected behavior associated with a particular position or status in a group or organization . Designation - nomination, appointment, or election to an office, position, etc. In many IT companies I have seen designations and roles as totally mismatch. So someone being called as an Architect does no different work from a developer. And sometimes Leads act as managers, and managers just act as project coordinators. This often leads to confusions among what is expected from people, and what are their goals. It's also important to understand that ROLE PRECEDES DESIGNATION. So if you are a lead aspiring to become a manager, in addition to your responsibilities, you need to get into the role of your manager. Start doing and understanding the nuances of being a manager. Role and Designation

There is lot of difference between role and designation, but v few people in IT industry actually understand it. Many a times role and designation are aligned, but many times it is not. Whenever it is not aligned it leads to lot of frustrations, and confusion for the person on what he should be doing. To make the matters worse, in your annual appraisal cycle you are judged on basis of the designation, and as you were in an unaligned role, you fare badly. The only way i see around is to press management and HR functions to constantly review this and correct this. However as this is a long run exercise it gets overshadowed by many other things.
